Persons businesses 1700s 1800s
« on: Wednesday 17 November 21 08:27 GMT (UK) »
1.
I am trying to get the information on some of my blenkinsopp & Leaton Family.
Occupations, businesses, leisure interests etc.
I have a George Blenkinsopp in about mid 1700s the following entry in the Newcastle book
Just says Mason. Also no indication of location of the business.
What I don’t understand is, what his business was!
It Just says “Mason” but what would that mean.
(Stone mason, free mason etc) in Whiteheads 1778 it is showing the
Same type of entry, just Mason.
2.
I would also be interested to know if any of the family were members of the “Freemasons”
In the areas of Newcastle upon Tyne. Whickham, fellside, Hamsterley, and or a lot of Co.durham & Northumberland etc
How can I find out this information??
Any help with by searches would be appreciated
Regards Jenny

Mason as occupation would mean just that - he was a stone mason. It's possible that he learned his trade as an apprentice, and you might find records of this.
Freemasons Hall in London may be your first port of call for freemasonry - or the olnine records on Ancestry.

Dear Graham
Thank you for your reply
I have looked at the Freemasons website in London and emailed a request to them for any possible information in the 1700s -1800s. Regarding my family.
Thank you once again

There are about 14 Newcastle newspaper mentions (circa 1750-1770) for a George Blenkinfopp (archaic long s form). Mainly adverts consisting of "Enquire of George Blenkinfopp" but they should mention something about his actual profession, etc.

Note: There is one 1750 newspaper mention under George Blenkinsopp.

ADDED: Is this anything to do with your chap?

I think the GB fellow is a mason by trade. See the link below.
Scroll down to: Ref: D/X 1493/65 and D/X 1493/140 - although the latter is "Mr. Blenkinsop".
