Thomas Salt born late 1700s
« on: Friday 21 April 23 19:03 BST (UK) »
Hello. So after years dabbling I still find myself hitting my head against a brick wall! ???

I am trying to find out where my 3 x great grandfather came from.....
He lived in St Neots, Huntingdonshire early 1800s, whereafter his son Thomas moved to London and the rest I know!
I know the majority of Salts originate in Staffs and got a few clues today purely based on finding what I think was the death record of a Henry Salt at Burma in WW2, who my dad used to refer to as an uncle or cousin. Henry was born in Staffordshire, so I'm thinking there must have been contact between the Staffordshire and London Salts but there is nobody left to ask on my side.

If you are still with me.......Does anyone have a Thomas Salt born late 1700s in their tree who disappeared?

Hope someone can put me out of my misery  :) Angie

I can see from your other thread:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=872276.0

That you are descended from Thomas Salt, who married Emma Richards in 1853. From their marriage certificate, I can see that Thomas' father, Thomas Sr., whose background you are researching, was described as carrier. If you wouldn't mind including relevant information such as this on your future posts, then that would make it easier to research for you  :)

I found this interesting little snippet in the Huntingdon, Bedford & Peterborough Gazette from 04 February 1837. It mentions the late Thomas Salt who operated a carrier business from St. Neots to London.

This must relate to the Thomas Salt who was buried on 5th February 1837 in St. Neots. He was age 50, so born c.1787.

I can see another article, which I believe relates to the same man (although he is described as waggoner in this one), that mentions a daughter called Sarah Salt.

Could be a coincidence, but how many carriers called Thomas Salt could have lived in St. Neots at this time? However, I am unsure how the 70-year-old Thomas Salt who died in 1845 in St. Neots fits into the equation...

In terms of marriages, I can see a marriage between a Thomas Salt, widower, and Mary Lambert in St. Neots in 1818. Can't view the parish register, unfortunately.

Are the 4 orphans, Sarah, Thomas, Miriam & Mary??

Where did the 3 daughters end up?
(If those are the wrong names, who were the three others and same question re whereabouts)

Thomas Salt who died 28 September 1837 left a will written 1835

Index of wills  - Diocese of Litchfield and Coventry has the will.

Contents might prove useful he may name brothers etc.

ADDED  This one died in Baswich/Berkswich buried 2 October 1837

Yes, QoW, that's me. But you have provided the full details, and newspaper images, which is better :)
Carole is right though, duplicate threads do result in wasted time and effort. Perhaps a mod can merge the two threads (and not include my superseded replies)

Carole has found Sarah in 1841, and she is still in St Neots, and single in 1851. Possible marriage for her there later?

It can't be the St Neots Thomas if he died 28 September, because that one was buried in February.

Miriam and Mary are in St Neots in 1841. But I didn’t know if they were the other two children or not. Hence my question to OP.   I am assuming that they have baptisms from their visit to the record office?? And want to confirm before chasing them around.

Good thinking, mckha.
I'm not even chasing Sarah around.
