James Swift, Toronto (married Teresa McCarrey)
« on: Wednesday 17 May 23 15:27 BST (UK) »
Am looking for the specific origins and parentage of James Swift who died in Toronto 23 Nov 1911, b. ca 1834.  He married Teresa (several spellings) McCarrey (several spellings) in York, ON 3 Feb 1864 (on Ancestry there is just a "card" rather than the full entry).

James was b in England, according to the censuses I have found him in.  He is with Teresa in 1871, in Toronto, age 36, she is 26.  They have two children James 5 and Annie 3.  Teresa and children b. USA. (The 1891 gives the kids' bp as Ontario, but I have find no record)

On the 1901 census James is with his daughter Annie, widowed.  He is living at 53 Huntley Street, Toronto, and he declared he came to Canada in 1850.  I cannot find him on the 1851 or 1861 censuses.

I have traced his son James' marriage and Jr.'s wife's death in 1942, at 53 Huntley Street, so am pretty sure I have this right!  No death for James Jr. and cannot find a marriage for Annie or a death for her in Ontario.

Wondering if I have missed a source for finding James Sr.'s biirthplace or parentage.

Have you tried contacting the cemetery office for his details?  I had a brickwall ancestor who was born in England, died in 1926, in Toronto. The cemetery office kindly gave me his details which included his exact place of birth. I wasn’t so lucky with other ancestors, though.

A couple of Canada Voters List entries for Annie Swift - 1949 - St Pauls Ontario - retired -
53 Huntley Street with James G Swift - retired.

Annie Swift still living at 53 Huntley Street in 1957. A fairly good age if she passed around this year.
So maybe a time frame for the death of James G Swift between 1949 - 1957 ??

In 1871, James is shown as porter (occupation).

1868-69 Toronto Directory has a
Swift, D.  Porter G.T.R. freight department, h. 489 Queen W.
https://archive.org/details/cihm_32439/page/n391/mode/1up

I wonder if he was any relation?

No relation to you man, but it’s possibly a small world…
There were two other Swift men living at 129 Agnes.  I’m almost positive my ancestor was living there around that time (but, possibly in the early 1870s).

Sandra

Very interesting, Sandra! I lived in Ottawa and area for many years and was wondering if Holland Street was named for him, which is a fairly major road near the Experimental Farm there.
