How long for copy of entry from Irish GRO?
« on: Friday 21 July 23 17:06 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I just ordered a copy of a death entry from the Irish GRO. It was pre-1870, and I have waited years now for them to digitise these earlier records, but I decided yesterday to just bite the bullet and pay for a copy sent via e-mail.

I am just wondering how long it will take for them to process my application? The England & Wales GRO is very quick (less than 1 week for my last .pdf certificate), but I can't really find anything online about the Irish GRO waiting times. Is it weeks, months, a year (please no!)?

Apologies if this has been asked before.

Deaths in Ireland were only introduced in 1864
Before that date you only have Church records.

The death was in 1867; I can see the registration on their website, it just hasn't been digitised.

Deaths 1864 - 1870 were microfilmed by the LDS many years ago. I regularly looked at them on a film viewer at a local FHC over 20 years ago. They may be online on Familysearch?  Perhaps someone can comment?

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I suffer from ill health so I am currently not able to go to a FHC.

I found a slightly more detailed entry on the FamilySearch website:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGFY-MS98

Which gives a death date in August and the residence as 'Bhatamy' (?) in Tralee R.D., but I have never heard of this place and cannot find it on the internet, so I still don't know if I have got the right man.

I would say that's a bad familysearch transcription of Rathanny.

I gave up transcribing for them when my transcriptions kept being over-ruled by people with no knowledge of Irish placenames or the Irish language.
