Maybe John b. 1929 never knew who his father was or simply had no memory about him? Could explain why he gave another family name (maternal family) for his father's when he married. You have his birth registration, so you do have the correct details for him I think.

Do you know anything about John's early years? Was he raised by his mother Mary?

The info found was from the Valuation Roll. This only lists the name of the householder, not any other people in the same household.
