Glamorganshire / Re: Cardiff Street Names
« on: Saturday 01 June 24 01:40 BST (UK)  »
Like many towns, Cardiff street names have changed over the years. Here's a list of changes showing the current name and the former name. If you have difficulty in locating an address in the census this may help.

Thank you. That could be very useful :)

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: J-M241 / J2b2 in England

A recent dig in York found remains of a person who had J2 L228 Y-DNA establishing that J2 was present during the Roman period in Britain.

Very interesting! Thank you very much for that information.

I'm J2-L26 (J2a1) and my family seem to have been in the Shropshire/Denbighshire/Flintshire area as far as I can tell for several centuries, though there are very few (if any) Jones surnames on FTDNA with J2a1, the Montgomery surname is much more common. Probably an NPE or surname change I think.

Do you think that this could be a Welsh patronymic thing?
This was suggested to me, regarding my late brother's Big Y-DNA matches.

.... I have considered there may be illegitimacy, adoption, straight up name change for unknown reasons...you name it. ... April J-W

I am still trying to sort out my 'J-M241 / J2b2' line. Although the male line I know is named Hampton, that is not a name that I am seeing in the match list so I, too, am now considering illegitimacy, adoption, name change, etc.
Oh the joys of family history! :)

Thank you for adding your connections.
Visiting Sri Lanka would be very special.
My late Dad was homesick, I think, but he still loved it there.

Hello Heddwch,
Sorry for such a long delay in replying. I only just found your reply.

Thank you for the information. I shall look into this further and see what I can find out. It's all very interesting.

I have certainly heard of the New Inn in Pontypridd. Mum has mentioned it to me several times. I'll ask her about this. :)

All the best
Tricia :)

HI  Elizabeth Miles lived in this house in 1911 ....
Kindest regards
Heddwch
Thank you :)
She sounds like a very interesting woman. Do you know if 'Miles' was her married or maiden name, please, because, during the same conversation with this elderly cousin, he mentioned a lady named Elizabeth, or Lizzie.

My grandfather was a shoeshine boy up to 1914 at Fairfield. ... At 14 he enlisted for WW1 by altering his birth certificate and joined the army.   His family contacted the owners of Fairfield and they paid for his release as he was underage.   He then returned to work for them before he enlisted again later.
What a kind thing to do, so if these are your relatives then 'Thank You ' because without their kindness I wouldn't be here most probably.

That is, indeed, very kind. Thank you for commenting. :)
I have no idea what our family relationship is to this place; just a mention of it being connected, by a now-deceased cousin. I wish I knew more :)

The Common Room / Re: A family story about a will
« on: Monday 11 January 21 19:00 GMT (UK)  »
... it seems very unlikely that Lady Coventry's last will could have been written as early as 1879. ...
Yes, that does seem unlikely. I shall be downloading it from the GRO, once it is ready, to have a look. And her husband's. :)

So if the will is relevant, it must be that it refers to the descendants of David Neale, rather than DN himself.
Could be.
I am just trying to sort out what happened for now :)

Thank you for your input. :)
