Armed Forces / Three brothers killed in action WW1
« on: Friday 19 July 19 10:15 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to help a friend solve a family mystery, the story goes that her grandmothers father, NEIL BROWN (born 1887 Dreghorn wounded WW1, died age 53 1940 Dreghorn) had three brothers killed in WW1, I have no other details but I have checked memorials in North Ayrshire with no results.

BROWN brothers all born North Ayrshire Scotland, all in the Army.
Parents WILLIAM BROWN  and  ELIZABETH CAMPBELL

JOHN born (1884 Irvine)
WILLIAM born (1890 Irvine)
ROBERT NEIL born (1895 Irvine)

There was another brother who is unlikely to have been in the war
HENRY BROWN born 1901 Kilwinning, he probably died age 67 in Irvine 1967.

I wonder if anyone can help.

Ayrshire / Daniel Stewart born 1802
« on: Friday 07 June 19 16:22 BST (UK)  »
For some years now I have been trying to find the parents of Daniel Stewart, a Sailor, was born in Irvine, Ayrshire, 20 May 1802, as noted on his Seaman’s Ticket in 1845. He married Susanna McAllister 19 June 1828 in Kilbride, Island 0f Arran, Buteshire. It was recorded that they were both of Mause, now Mayish, Brodick.
Their children were born in Troon, Dundonald, this refers to what is now the Harbour area of Irvine. James 1829, Daniel 1832, Ronald 1834, Lilias 1836, William 1839, Elizabeth 1840.

I have all the later information on the family but  I need help in finding Daniels parents.
If Daniel born in 1802 had followed the usual Scottish naming pattern then his father would be James but this pattern did vary on occasions. I think his father was Daniel below, the following notes might explain why.

There were four Daniel Stewart marriages in Ayrshire in the twenty years prior to 1802, one in Ayr (Jean Walker 1790) and two in St Quivox, (Agnes Mun 1791 & Elizabeth Davis 1795). As far as I can see there were no children for any of the above and no clear death records for those names.
I think it is most likely that Daniel Stewart married Lilias Hamilton, in Stewarton in 1799 and they had a daughter Elizabeth born 21/9/1800 baptism, Irvine 22/9/1800.

The only record for a Daniel Stewart born in Ayrshire between 1750 & 1790 was Sunday 15 September 1771 he was baptised Monday 16 September 1771, at home, Sevenacres, Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Father: John & blank. There were of course a large number of Daniel Stewarts born elsewhere in Scotland and there is also the possibility that the record was lost or did not survive.

Lillias Hamilton was baptised 27 Sep 1770 at Corrigills, Kilbride, Bute. (Arran) Father James. I think something must have happened to Daniel & Lillias and I also think Daniel 1802 may have spent time with his grandfather James Hamilton and/or Lillias’s brother also James who married Lillias McBride.
James, son of Daniel & Susanna was on Arran at time of 1841/1851 censuses and his brother Daniel junior was also there in 1841, both were living with members of the Hamilton family who were related to Lillias.

Sorry this is so long but any observations would be welcome.

Midlothian / Helen Geddes about 1814 - 1880
« on: Wednesday 29 May 19 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Helen died Blackburn, Livingston, West Lothian in 1880, her death was reported by her Son in Law. The Certificate stated that she was illegitimate, however both parents were named
JAMES HAMILTON STODDART and ISABELLA GEDDES
On the 1851/61 censuses she is noted as born Lasswade but no trace of birth in Lasswade or Blackburn.

The name James Hamilton Stoddart appears on a few 20th century statutory records but only one 19th century and he died age 55 1858 Logie, Perthshire, He was a Journey man paper maker born 1803. There is no mention of family names on the cert. I suspect he was not from there and if the age at death is correct he is unlikely to be the father of Helen.
There are no church records, census or otherwise for the exact name on SP.

I have however discovered the following baptisms at Lasswade but no marriage.

HAMILTON STODDART/ISABELLA GEDDES or BELL GATHERS or BELLA GETHERS

JAMES 30/04/1820, ISABELLA 17/03/1822, ALEXANDER 13/06/1827.

In 1841, Hamilton age 39 a coal miner and son Alex are with the Muir family in West Calder and in 1851 Hamilton 50, a labourer, is in Lasswade with a new wife Christian age 30. I think this is Catherine Gray who he married 1850 in Duddingston.

I wonder if anyone can add any information on Mr Stoddart of Isabella Geddes.

Ayrshire / Reverend James AITKEN 1804 – 1881
« on: Saturday 23 March 19 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
James was the son of James Aiken & Martha Houston, they had 8 children born in Paisley, Inveresk, Glasgow and the last 3 in Kilmarnock, they moved there about 1808.

James junior was ordained at Kilmarnock High Church 3 August 1843 and was on the census there from 1841 until his death in 1881. He left a will in favour of his eldest brother William (1797 Paisley), however William died in 1878 and left his will in favour of James.

I have sufficient information on the Rev James and most of his siblings but nothing on William (of Hawthorn Bank, Kilmarnock, noted on Wills) or their father James born about 1775. Son Roberts’s baptism record in 1811 states he was the 7th child and his father James was a Wright.
Martha was born 1776 in Riccarton and I have her details.

Can anyone help with James senior or William, census records for the latter seem none existant?

Ireland / Thomas Carey born around 1755
« on: Saturday 10 March 18 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help find a birth for Thomas.

He married Janet Bone, (born 1758), St Quivox, Newton on Ayr, Scotland in 1786 and they had 4 children baptised there. I have all their details.

No record of a birth for Thomas in Scotland so I think he may have been born in Ireland. The name is a bit of a problem, I have seen Carrey, Carry even Currie.

Regards Colin.
