Shropshire / Marriage of Hugh Nevet to Mary??? before 1702
« on: Wednesday 21 December 22 01:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have six children born at Holy Trinity, Much Wenlock to Hugonis (Hugh) and Mariae (Mary) Nevet as follows: Maria 29 Dec 1702, Willus (William) 12 Aug 1705, Thomas 5 May 1708, Elizabeth(a) 10 Apr 1711; Hugh (Hugo) 17 Dec 1713 and Sarah 9 Oct 1715.

I am trying to find the marriage of the parents which I would assume could be up to two or three years prior to the first child and have come across two confusing alternatives.

1) From the Montgomeryshire Marriages & Banns database on findmypast there is:
Hugh Nevett to Mary Reignald sometime during 1700 at Buttington Montgomeryshire

2) From Herefordshire Bishops Transcripts database on familysearch there is:
Hugh Newett to Mary Reignald at Bicknor Kent

Does anyone have a way to see the actual written entries to verify the transcriptions?

Cheers, Colin

Armed Forces / Henry Murrant navy service 1847-1850
« on: Friday 18 November 22 03:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to connect to a Henry Murrant for which I have found two navy references:

1.  HMS Excellent 1847-1848 with next of kin sister Ann Stokes.  From other research this would be Henry Murrant born 1820 Alverstoke to Henry & Lucretia Murrant.

2.  HMS Cormorant 1849-1850 with next of kin mother Ann (presumably Murrant).  This one could be the son of George & Ann Murrant (nee Hunt) born 1830 baptised 1834 Alverstoke and would be a nephew of the one above.

Is there any record that could help determine of they are the same man or different men as suspected?

Cheers, Colin

Armed Forces / Boer War - civilian staff with 3rd Highland Brigade
« on: Wednesday 04 May 22 05:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am trying to locate Sidney/Sydney Wire who claimed to be an interpreter with Maj-Gen Wauchope and the 3rd Highland Brigade at Belmont, Graspan, Modder River and Magersfontein.

To the best of my knowledge he was not an enlisted man but a civilian under hire.

I have looked at all the regular Boer War sites but they deal only with enlisted personnel so I don't know where else to look.

Cambridgeshire / Robert Mercer/Macer/Masor b1620 Bottisham
« on: Thursday 31 March 22 03:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am trying to verify the following information regarding this person:

Robert Macer baptised 17 Apr 1620 Bottisham to Henry & Anne; siblings Elizabeth 1621, Henry 1625, Ann 1628, Susanna 1630 & Mary 1633.

Robert is supposed to have married Anne Diss b1620 in 1641 but I cannot locate that marriage, any children or her death.

Robert then marries Frances (surname unknown born c1630) in 1650 which I cannot locate.  There are three children born in Pampisford; John 1653, Robert 1656 and dies that year, and Thomas 1656.  I cannot locate the death of Frances but believe it to be late 1656 or early 1657.

Robert marries a third time to Mary Darbie (b1638 Fowlmere) in 1657 at Whittlesford.  I can locate five children all born in Pampisford; Robert 1660/1, Mary 1662/3, John 1665, Elizabeth 1668, Henry 1673.  Given the gaps there may well be others.

You will also see that he had two sons named John born 1653 and 1665.  I cannot locate a death for the first one to exclude him as the most likely husband in the marriage John Mercer to Elizabeth Swan in 1677 at Pampisford.

Any help is always appreciated.

Cheers, Colin

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Help needed with Ancestry ThuLines
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 23:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have been looking at my ThruLines for possible links and came across something I don't understand with the number of DNA matches at each generation pair, particularly my direct paternal line.

For my parents there are no DNA matches for either of them as none of my siblings and their children have tested; makes sense.

For my grandparents I again get no DNA matches for the same reason, no testing.

For my great grandparents I get three matches for both partners and I know how they connect.

For my GG grand parents I get nine matches each and I know how they all connect.

The one I don't understand is for my GGG grand parents for which I get zero matches on the father and eight matches on the mother (eight of nine from the previous generation with one match dropping off as they have a different maternal line).

Can some-one explain this for me?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating of baby William photo
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 23:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I think the colour photo is of my father born April 1927.  The child looks to me to be about a year old so making it what I think would be mid-1928.

In the black & white photo the little child in front "smoking" the cigarette is my father.

Are these photos of the same child?

Cambridgeshire / Martha Howling baptised 25 Oct 1652 Great Shelford
« on: Thursday 18 November 21 02:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Is the actual Great Shelford parish register available anywhere as the father's name is missing from the familysearch.org transcript, which is:

1652 Oct 25  Howling  Martha dau of           and Sarah

This suggests to me that the name is illegible rather than being an illegitimate birth.

Many online trees attribute this child to Thomas Howling and Sarah Knight but they don't marry until 1659.

Any help is always appreciated.

World War One / What might this uniform be for?
« on: Wednesday 17 November 21 05:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

This is a photo of my maternal grandmother Ethel Tasker born 1900 taken I estimate about 1917.

Is this a WAAC uniform or more likely a girl guides uniform?

London and Middlesex / Miriam Richardson nee Roberts b1760 m1783 died ??
« on: Wednesday 06 October 21 05:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to find what happened to Miriam after the birth of the her last known child in 1803.

Miriam Roberts born 6 Dec 1760 baptized 21 Dec 1760 at St Gregory by St Paul to Samuel & Elizabeth Roberts.

Miriam Roberts married John Richardson 6 May 1783 at St Botolph Bishopsgate and the had seven known children all baptized at this church: John 1785; Miriam 1787; Elizabeth 1789; Sophia 1792; Lucy 1797; Margaret 1800; William James 1802/3.

John Richardson I think is buried 30 June 1823 at St James Clerkenwell age 62.

There is an online tree that attaches this marriage to an American family but I cannot see the connection at all.

Any ideas?
