... I have read about 17 pages of this thread ...

A quick tip for all newcomers to this topic, and for "oldcomers" who want to re-read it ...

Click on the "print" button at the top or bottom right of the topic.  This won't actually print it but will display the whole topic on one page (in a printable format).  You won't see any images, but there aren't that many on this topic so that shouldn't be a problem.

Phew thanks - the notification emails haven't been able to keep up and it was taking an age to catch up.

Excellent to know that.  Is this Print button a new feature, or have I been asleep for seven years?

JULIAN

I'm pretty sure it's always been there.

You can also try scrolling to the very bottom of the screen and click on WAP2 and see what you get then  8)

That's a version for mobiles with no graphics capabilities.

If you have a flat-screen monitor, it is fairly important that you set your graphics settings to match the capabilities of your monitor.  It won't damage the monitor if you don't, but if you use the wrong setting, images can appear stretched, and the quality of text on the screen won't appear as clear as it could be.

What you need to do is to find the manual for your monitor (or Google the make/model) and find the native resolution of the screen.  This is the actual number of pixels on the screen horizontally x vertically.  If you have a 1920 x 1080 screen and you supply it with 1280 x 1024 graphics, the screen will have to continually 're-map' the pixels, and the aspect ratio won't be right, so pictures will appear distorted.  When you set the graphics output to match the native resolution of the monitor, then all the pixel information will go to the intended screen pixels, and it will look as good as it possibly can be.

Sometimes you will have to hunt for the native resolution of a flat screen, but it will be there somewhere.

P.S. When the computer monitor is exactly matched by the video output settings, it is said to be 'Pixel Perfect' - i.e. each pixel on the screen is exactly showing the intended pixel.

Technical Help / Re: Androids and Flash - some info if you get one for Christmas !
« on: Saturday 22 December 12 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
One more hint -  if you get any sort of tablet for Christmas, and you find that the battery doesn't last as long as the manufacturers claim.

Get one of these....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0067UPRQ4/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i01

It's a small battery device in a small box which will just about fit in the palm of your hand.  When the device itself is fully charged, it will charge a tablet at least twice before it needs recharging, and it also has a small built-in torch.  It will work on any tablet that will recharge from a USB outlet, which includes iPads, iPods, iPhones, and most other tablets and phones.  You might need a USB cable with a plug to fit your tablet, but most tablets come with these.  It comes with 2 USB cables and a small selection of popular adaptors, and a string pouch for carrying it around.  It's very small and quite light.

The Anker Astro 2 costs £23.99 with free delivery from Amazon, and I think it's well worth the money.  It means that when the battery in my tab runs down, I don't need to get out of bed to recharge the battery  8)

Technical Help / Androids and Flash - some info if you get one for Christmas !
« on: Saturday 22 December 12 11:53 GMT (UK)  »
I've just got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, and I was dismayed that it would not display Flash graphics in web pages (the BBC News site use Flash for their embedded web page video).

When I tried to load the latest version of Adobe Flash as an app, I was informed that there was no compatible Flash version for my Android version.  I found this a bit odd, because my Tab has Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 and my phone has the same version, and this does display embedded Flash.

The answer wasn't too hard to find - apparently Adobe has very quietly been withdrawing support for Flash on Android devices since Android 3.0, so there's no Flash apps for anything with Android 4 on it (and that includes all new Android devices).

The solution is just as simple - go into the general settings of your Android device, and under Security you'll see 'Unknown Sources' - "Allow installation of non-Market apps" - tick this box

Then go to http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html

Scroll down the page and find Flash Player 11.1 for Android 4 (the top one).  Download and run.  This will install Flash on your Android device.  If you wish, you can untick the box in the security settings, but it doesn't matter much if you don't.

The reason why my mobile phone supports Flash is because it was originally shipped with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), so Flash was installed and updated when the phone was updated to later Android versions (it now has Ice Cream Sandwich too).

Enjoy !  :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "there are two options" ?

If you go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4062&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=57769

There is only 1 driver option - you just need to choose Windows 7, 64 bit

There's a couple of utilities that you could download if the drivers don't fix the problem  :)

Technical Help / Re: Printing census pages from Ancestry.co.uk
« on: Saturday 22 December 12 11:18 GMT (UK)  »
Unless it's a 1911 census page, you'll almost certainly need to edit it as Lydart suggested, because you won't be able to get rid of all the black surround otherwise.  Crop off all the black, and then print, and in your printer settings make sure that the paper size is A4, and set the printer to "Fit to page" (make sure page orientation is landscape).

Can I ask how you got to the Mobile site. There used to be a button in the top-right corner but I can no longer find it.

That was causing a lot of problems for non-mobile users who clicked it by mistake, so Trystan removed it.

The software will recognise what type of computer is being used and set the style accordlingly, but it's possible that some hand-held devices will not be recognised.

well it didn't recognise an ipad  :-\

I don't think you'd need the mobile version on a 10" screen ?  :)

Tis OK, Bob.....I'm just laughing at the thought of having some of my typos there forever.    ;D
I do check, because I make heaps of typos with my very crooked fingers, but sometimes some do slip through, and I don't seem to notice them.

It doesn't matter what order letters are in a word. ... Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe

Hope this helps  ;D

I know it's Christmas and all that, but 11AM is a bit early to hit the sherry, isn't it ?   ;)  ;D ;D ;D

Tried it this morning - worked fine.  Used up all my credits trying to find something new about my g.g. grandfather.  Found nothing new.

Glad it has helped some RC'ers  :)
