Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Confused
« on: Thursday 06 June 24 20:36 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Davies in Eccleston is not my Thomas Davies Rosie, mine is from Burghill in Herefordshire, born 1854, its now got me thinking if the Cecilia Ashton is HIS Cecilia Ashton at all, which would kind of make you think how a lass from Lancashire married a bloke from Herefordshire 80 miles away.
I'm going to have to revisit my paperwork, starting with the stuff I actually do know, my grandfathers birth in 1888, I'm happy with the Davies/Davies line in all this but I'm gonna have to do a bit more digging regarding his mother.......................watch this space.

I understand that Rosie, I'm confused how they met though.
Thomas was a Cooper making barrels in a cider factory so a job that kept him in one place, and yet he met and married a widow with 2 children from 80 miles away, as far as I can tell Cecilia had no family connection in Herefordshire, its a mystery I'll never solve I suppose, my family seems to be full of them  ::)

Good point Trish, in fact I'll request them for both Cecilia's as conformation.

My direct route forward from Richard Ashton, born in Warrington June 1778 - died March 1928, and married  to a Mary Rigby or Wright and given the dates, I suspect the mother of 1818 Richard is Mary Rigby, married to 1778 Richard in 21st July 1813, unfortunately I have no further details regarding Mary Rigby or Mary Wright for that matter.
Richard Ashton, the son of the above, born January 1818 in Widnes, died July 1887 in Prescot, married Cecilia Baldwin 28th August 1842 in St Helens, born May 1821 in Farnworth, died October 1899 in Prescot.
My next direct line relative is the daughter of the above, Cecilia Ashton, born January 1854 in Martinscroft, died in 1919, married Thomas Davies who was born in 1854 in Burghill, Herefordshire, died in the same place in October 1916.
Now, the fly in the ointment with this relationship, Cecilia was a widow with children, previously married to William Wildbore and lived in Sutton, Lancashire, how she ended up with Thomas from Herefordshire is a mystery.
Initially I couldn't find a marriage for Thomas and Cecilia but I've got a lead for 1885 to Prescot, Lancashire..................incidentally Wildbore died in 1884 so she didn't let the grass grow under her feet.
My next direct line relative is my grandfather, Thomas James Davies/Davis, born July 1888 in Herefordshire and died in January 1962 in Manchester, married Elsie Jane Bell in December 1930, Elsie was born in January 1906 in Congleton Cheshire and died in September 1982 in Manchester.
My dad was a result of this union, Harry Davis Born October 1933 in Manchester and still alive, married Margaret Cecilia Brown in March 1955, 9 months and 4 days before I was born  :-\
Hope this helps moving things along but I'm still struggling with 1778 Richards line going backwards.

Fairly new to genealogy so my main search engine until recently was the free  Family Search but eventually you realise you have to use other resources which you have to pay for so I enrolled with Ancestry and the info just came flooding in.
Unfortunately hiccups do occur and "facts" you find on one can be contradicted by the other, which is the case here.

I have a 4x grandfather called Richard Ashton, born 7th June 1778 in Warrington and died 30th March 1828 (I think).
Richard was married to Mary Cuthbert, born 14th January 1798 in Louth Lincolnshire and died 16th January 1870, again in Louth so I suspect this may not be the correct spouse, however, both Family Search AND Ancestry gave me their son, Richard Ashton born 19th January 1818 in Widnes and died
July 1887 In Prescott, married to Cecilia Baldwin born 6 May 1821 in Farnworth and died October 1899 in Prescott.
So, other than the Mary Cuthbert issue I'm fairly happy.
My bigger problem seems to be the father of the 1778 Richard.
Family Search names him as Richard Ashton born 29 June 1750 in Blackburn, no details of his death though, if he's the daddy it would make him 28 if he is 1778 Richards father.
His wife is listed as Jennet Whalley born 1752 in Blackburn and died 26 February 1774, again in Blackburn.
These facts would intimate to me that they are not the parents of 1778 Richard despite what Family search tells me.
Now, Ancestry......they have 1778 Richards parents as Richard Ashton born about 1738 in Middle Hulton and died about 1835, in the same place, married to Martha Hatton born 11th November 1739 In Great Bolton and died about 1783 in the same place.
My gut feeling is the Bolton Ashtons and not the Blackburn ones are my guys parents, I'm struggling to wrap my head around the Mary Cuthbert issue but as with all things in genealogy, its all about the evidence, which I'm struggling to find.
I suspect this is probably down to lack of experience in searching so any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheshire / Re: Mary Ann Bell Nee Clutton

I had looked at the Sarah White marriage before as it was the one Ancestry threw up at me as a hint but for some reason I dismissed it, I cant remember why though, I'll revisit that one, like I say, I'm not glued to one school of thought and the Thomas and William combo kind of looked wrong too.
Given there background, I'm assuming rightly or wrongly that the boating thing is passed down the line, as you pointed out Thomas Clutton is listed on the 1861 census as captains assistant at 10 years old and I'll take more notice of this.
I understand that people die early and the surviving spouse marries again, the Hannah Clews thing being a case in point, and whilst she is not in my direct line, info like that does provide corroborating evidence.
Thanks for your help on this, its given me a bit to work on but hopefully I'm on the right track.

Thomas Clutton Born 7th March 1851, Shropshire Died 30th November 1894 Forge Field Sandbach Cheshire.
Married to Sarah Jane Minshull.
His Father, William Clutton Born 20th May 1834 in Wrenbury, Cheshire Died 7th March Church Lawton, Cheshire, I have no spouse for William.
His father, Thomas Clutton Born 1911 in Acton, Cheshire, death date unknown.
Married to Margaret Dykes in 1929 in Wrenbury.
I have William on the 1841 census age 7, his parents both age 30 but with there birthplace just listed as Cheshire, the 1851 census however shows Margaret born in Middlewhich Cheshire. The 1861 shows Thomas as born in Burland, Cheshire and Margaret born in Lughton, Cheshire. 1871 census shows Thomas born in Burland and Margaret born in Leighton.
And thats as far back as I've got.
I dont have certificates yet, thats the next step.
I'm happy with the 1851 Thomas, further back I can be persuaded that his father William and his Father Thomas could be wrong.

Interesting article, and when I get time I'm going to go in to the life of canal boat people a bit more seriously, from the little I know a lot of the Clutton's plied this trade.................but, in the meantime I'm still stumbling my way through research, although I suspect the problems I'm having IS because they are boat people and transient.
