I couldn't agree with that more !  The UK has the most draconian copyright laws in the western world.  It's still illegal to make backup copies of a CD that you have purchased.  If you've ever 'ripped' one of your own CDs to put it on your MP3 player, you have broken UK laws.

This book has been mentioned elsewhere on RC....

Pre-1841 Censuses & Population Listings in the British Isles (Paperback)
By Colin R Chapman

available from www.thebookdepository.co.uk for £12.12 (free postage).  The book is a US import, so could take about a week to arrive.

This book does not contain the actual pre-1841 data, but it does tell you which towns and villages had censuses pre-1841 that contain actual names.  It also suggests other lists which would contain names, and in all cases it tells you where this data is stored.  A very useful book, especially for the beginner.

Just one small plea - please could the 'unread', 'replies', and 'Logout' be more spaced out along the bar ?

On small touch screens it's too easy to hit Logout when you really wanted to see replies.

I'm locking this thread because it was not intended to be a discussion on Microsoft vs other OS.

If you want a cheap upgrade to Win8, then buy it, and if you don't, then don't !

Merry Christmas  :) ;

With respect, copyright laws are not really that clear-cut - there's a lot of 'grey areas'.  I haven't re-read the thread you linked to, but I clearly recall Guy Etchells reminding us all that a photo or scan of a document or image itself carries a copyright, if of course the person who did the scanning had the rights to photograph the item in the first place.

Windows 9 won't be any better.  It'll just become obsolete more quickly, like cars  :D

Thanks mshrmh and Lizzie, I just checked my options on Firefox and find that it has indeed reverted to English US.

Have now re-set it to the language I want.
Perhaps I should take a leaf out of your book Lizzie and make sure it realises that I crack the whip. ;D

It's just told me that realise has a Z.   I shall have to crack the whip a bit harder. ;)

Ahh, just install Google Chrome - it has a spelling checker that you can set to UK English and it stays there  :)  Chrome also has this great facility where you highlight a word or words, then right-click, and you have the option to Google search the highlighted words.

It will charge any phone which has a 5V charger.  That's most phones.  You would need a USB to phone cable, which is supplied with most phones.  The battery pack charges up from a power supply (not supplied) with a mini-USB connector, which most phones have.  Amazon say that it's compatible with the Nokia N8, N9, N800 and N900.
