London and Middlesex / Re: No mother on Baptism record c.1768

Hi Trish

This post is twelve years old now so I believe Grace Collier was probably baptised in 1740 in Axminster, Devon.  The 1764 marriage license does not seem to exist.

I do not know where the Spice part of the name comes from, but I am very intrigued! I wondered if it even had something to do with Thomas Ledgerwood being a mariner and perhaps working the Spice Routes. He is also mentioned as being a mariner on the marriage record, so I think that he moved with Grace to London before the birth of their son, also named Thomas, who was baptised in St Dunstan's, Stepney in 1765.  William Spice Ledgerwood was baptised in 1771 in the same area at St George in the East.

I always considered a Spice-Ledgerwood marriage possibility but have never found one.  I never thought of a Collier possibility, anyway, I thank you for your suggestion  :) So I think the Collier's are probably from Devon and I do not know about Thomas Ledgerwood. Legerwood is a village in the Scottish Borders.

I am glad that you found someone even if the circumstances are sad.

This might be more tricky for you as more recent emigration. I am not based in South Africa. You may be able to find the deaths or wills, or at least that they are indexed.

Was it the same surname though as I am assuming you checked mother’s maiden name on the FindMyPast or GRO index before ordering?
