This is the MIC for 6/8479 Pte George Jones Born Spittalfields Enlisted Felixstowe Resident Felixstowe kia 18/08/16 3rd Batt Rifle Brigade.

Hi Ady,

Yes, that's the one from the first medal card on page one of this thread.  I know he died in 1916, and I've even found his death on the index.

We'd all love to know why he was in Felixstowe though...

They are to 4 different lads.
The 7th Rifle Brigade Distinguished  Conduct Medal was Gazetted in 1917 but he may have been awarded it before. There is usually a citation in the LG for a DCM.
The date of the gazette you want(if it is your man ? i dont think it is different rank, number and date suggests not??) is on the card.Did you find any other cards with his number?

Ady

Ah, so the downlaod I purchased from the National Archives are four to a page and only the one top left is MY George then?

Are any from the send medal card I purchased MY George?

Hi

Meant to say that he was also awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal along with his 1914 Star.

His Regimental number as a Private soldier was 4108.  By the time he reached Sergeant it looks as though his Regimental number had changed - to the longer number underneath.

So he was promoted to Sergeant?  That still doesn't make him an officer and enable us to see what he got his gallantry medal for then?

I wish I understood the military a bit better...

... and would you say the first medal card shows that he has a middle initial?  That might be why I can't find his birth certificate anywhere!

Hi Tsu

If you are certain that your George Jones was killed at the Somme on 18th August, 1916, then I'm afraid that you have been looking at the medal index cards for other people.

The four MICs you posted are all for four different individuals.   :'(
Reid: Nicol: Peterhead and Aberdeen
McDonald: Greig: Milne: Aberdeenshire
Moreland: Lanarkshire, Whitehaven in Cumbria and Ireland
Cunningham: Lanarkshire, Cumbria and Ireland
Halliday: Falkirk, Stirlingshire and Ireland
Redpath: Stirlingshire and Banbridge

With the first card i dont think so i think its just a mark on the card theres too much annotation may have to wait til the original is colour scanned to Ancestry :(

But if you have the medals and they show 6/8479 i would discard the first one and purchase the 6/8479 one for its info.

I cant find a second card to 6/8479 and there is nothing on SDGW about him been decorated for bravery.
