FROME family of New Sarum - help needed
« on: Thursday 26 June 08 20:03 BST (UK) »
Some time ago I posted a request for help with the FROME family from Wiltshire, and thought I had exhausted that line of inquiry (see: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,226325.msg1197562.html#msg1197562)

But a Will has opened up some new avenues, and I would appreciate more help.

The Reverend Dr Thomas FROME (ca 1735-1778) married Theodosia SKINNER, possibly in Wiltshire. I would like to find their marriage if I can.

Theodosia died in 1830, and in her will, she mentions the following beneficiaries:

daughter Catherine FAZAKERLEY (husband's name not known)
daughter Mary Susan FROME (born ca 1777)
daughter Theodosia FROME
daughter Dorothy FROME (born ca 1771)
daughter Jane YOUNG (born ca 1782) (husband Captain John YOUNG)
daughter Eliza Harriet CHURCHILL (born ca 1784) (husband Rev Benjamin CHURCHILL)

She mentions (by name) grandchildren:
Edward FROME
Theodosia FROME
Emily FROME
Georgina FROME
John FAZAKERLEY
Harriet WILKINSON

Can anyone help me to identify when and where Catherine FROME married?

Also, can anyone identify the parents of Edward, Theodosia, Emily and Georgina FROME? I am pretty sure that Theodosia and Emily were living together in St Peter Port Guernsey in 1841; Theodosia was 40 and Emily was 35. They were not born on the Island.  So that may give a clue as to when they were baptised - some time around 1801 to 1806.

It would also be helpful to find the maiden name of Harriet WILKINSON, but this a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack as I don't know how old she was in 1830.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Thanks

Philip Candy

Hi

I wonder why , on the 1841 census, Theodossia and Emily do not have "E" (for England?) in the POB section? Were they born overseas somewhere?

I have found a Georgana Frome unm, 46 Clergyman's daughter born Gibraltar on the 1851 census. So b c 1805

also on 1851 there is an Edward C Frome, captain Royal engineers, 49 (1802) also born Gibraltar, In 1881 he is a general Royal Engineers aged 79 b Spain.

What do you think?

Well that's a great start. I obviously misread Theodosia's maiden name in the Will.

Thanks so much for a very helpful entry.

Kind regards

Phil

This is really interesting. I had found a Georgina Frome in St Andrew Plymouth in 1841, and that has Gibraltar next to it as well.

Edward Charles FROME was a Surveyor-General in South Australia's early history. According to his online biography, his father was Rev J T Frome and "orphaned early in his life," which would explain why the parents aren't mentioned in Theodosia's will.

This looks like a promising lead.

Thanks so much.

Best wishes

Philip

Another snippet: according to the online directory of Church of England Clergy, Reverend John Thomas FROME was ordained in 1795 and only had a short period as a minister, so he could easily have been born around 1768 and died young.

Hi Phil

I have just spotted Georgina in 1841 and noted the POB as Gibraltar.

there is a death for Theodosia in 1851 in Hampshire .... wonder if she is yours and what the death cert may reveal?

If Edward's dad was Rev. JT Frome ...that would link in nicely with Georgana Frome in 1851 being a clergyman's daughter.

Hi Phil and Deb,

Still looking but not having a lot of joy - The only birth I have been able to find is Dorothy and that is on the IGI anyway

Gibraltar - They certainly seem to have got about.

I find a couple of possible grandchildren in Guernsey Channel Isles in 1841

BAYNES George 50 N Army H P
FROME Theosedia 40 N Ind
FROME Emily 35 N Ind

Nothing further on where they were born listed

Edward C Frome(49, 1802) had two younger daughters born in South Australia ..

In 1851:
Dora 3 and Eleanor 2 = S Australia
Emily 16 and Marion 15 = Kent

seems to be a big gap in between the children's births

His wife ,Jane , is 37 , b Trewhitt House, Northumberland...I wonder if she is his 2nd wife , which would account for the gap in births.

deb

added ...can't find Emily b c 1806 in 1851 :-\
