Thanks Lodger. I happened to find a scribbled note I'd made when I was a teenager many moons ago and had asked my Gran some questions about family. Beside William's name, I'd written 'Motherwell Times' so searched his name in that newspaper via Findmypast and hey presto.
Also found a really informative obituary that I've just added to a post I've started in the Armed Forces forum trying to find out more about the births of William's children (as they were born in various places whilst he moved around with army). Amazing how some long ago scribbles can be the key to a little bit of treasure!
