It may be a trick of light, but I see the brim and front of a cap under his left arm..

Or it may be just folds of his jacket. ???

- Emma, b. 1833 or 1841 in Guildford. This is the daughter I want to try to find more about. She appears in the 1851 census and her age is given as 10 I am quite sure but could be 18. I haven't been able to find her birth cert on GRO so think that maybe she was born in 1833.

The numeral for her age is likely to be 10.
Children are usually listed in descending age order.
She is perhaps  not yet born on the 1841 given by amondg

This linked thread on the Australian board will save some double up searching regarding the son William Hugh BRENT, b. 1834

Hi.

Can you tell us please,
Who was the informant on both the death of Jane and the birth of Ellen?
Mix ups and confusion do occur on both types of certificate.

I once saw an informant in his teens who was a relation of the newborn, possibly a cousin of the new child.
There was no requirement that a parent attend, nor the infant.

When he got to town to register the child's birth he was not prepared for all the questions and got the parents right and not much else.!

Is this the death of Jessie, the eldest daughter deceased?
Was John working at the railways?
