Family History Beginners Board / Difficult to explain !
« on: Saturday 15 October 22 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Sister-in-law asked me to 'do' her family tree.

Think I've fallen at the first hurdle!

Not giving names as some of the people still alive and easily identifiable as it's an extremely unusual surname.

s-i-l father's name T.B.N. b. 1939 - marries A.L.E. in 1958

T.B.N. marries E.H.J in 1963 (same district as A.L.E.)        info from Find My Past.

s-i-l born 1963 - certain her mother (still alive) was called  P.J. before her marriage to T.B.N.

1) There should be a record of divorce of T.B.N. and A.L.N.(formerly A.L.E.)   - where can I find this?
2) Why is T.B.N. recorded as marrying E.H.J. in 1963 when the person he married in 1963 was P.J?

Thanks.

John James Dorrington...born Dec 1/4 1910 in Biggleswade.  Parents John James Dorrington b.1884 and Florence Dorrington b 1874.

Cannot find this family on the 1911 census.  (On the 1912 Electoral Registers John James Dorrington is at West*** Street and Florence in Hardwicke Shefford.)

Cannot find ref to the birth of the father John James Dorrington (b.1884) and I can't find him on the censuses of 1891 and 1901. Cannot find ref to the marriage of John J D and Florence.

The parents John J D and Florence D died in 1960 and 1956 respectively - the son John J D died in 1993 in Bedford.

(a familiar surname but a completely new search!)    Thanks.

Are records of students available for the  1895-1897 period available.

I am looking for Henry Forbes Harding born 1877/1879 who was a student at Owens College.

was born 1877-1879.

He is listed in the C of E Births and Baptisms Manchester England 1813-1915 but I can't access these records - need help with the finding the name of his parents.

He is also listed in the Criminal Records but his parents names have been redacted - why would their names have been redacted?

Many thanks.

The Lighter Side / Apples/Afalau.
« on: Thursday 18 August 22 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Last night heard my mother talking on the phone (land-line!) to her friend.  She was talking about her neighbour who is often drunk and noisy - she was saying how alike the neighbour was to his father and grandfather.
Then she said 'Dydi'r afal ddim yn disgyn yn bell o'r goeden.'   which transaltes to 'The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.'

Do familial characteristics - good or bad appear in one generation after another ? if they do is a hereditary thing or a 'learnt' thing?
