Seeking info on the history of this small settlement called 'New England (Hill)' within Brentmoor Heath Common just NW of West End, on the A322 - its only accessible by trackway from the A322 Gordon Boys School r'bout or the B311  Red Road. (Today there are 5 dwellings, 2 quite old and thatched .... )

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/idmap.srf?x=493500&y=161500&z=120&sv=new+england&st=3&tl=Map+of+New+England,+Surrey+&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=idmap.srf

It can be found on all Census back to 1841, and is surrounded by War Department granite boundary posts, isolating it from the Common which the Army acquired in 1879 for £10 per acre compensation monies to the locals ...

It appears on many old maps of the area, including Roques, and is as much a 'landmark' as the nearby 'Three Barrows'. But it doesnt appear in 'Surrey Placenames' or similar publications.

No luck in searching A2A so far .... and Surrey Archives in Woking nor Surrey Heath Museum could throw any light on it.

any pointers appreciated .. would really like to know how it became so named !

Cheers, The Newfster  :)

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / 1891 census - Dowdeswell family, West Ham District
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 16:24 GMT (UK)  »
Just realised I had the wrong marriage for my Pledger ancestor, should be:-

Marriages Dec 1913

Dowdeswell  Clara R  [spouse Pledger]  W. Ham  v4a p411   to  Pledger  Charles R  [spouse Dowdeswell]

Clara Rose Dowdeswell is with her family in 1901 - Father George c1844 Gloucs, Baunton and mother Ellen c1851 Bridgend  ...  RG13; Piece: 1625; Folio: 75; Page: 36

George can be traced back to 1851 OK , and his marriage to Ellen Diamond in Kensington 1872 - he was a copper up till 1881 in Hillingdon, and a School Board Attendance Inspector in 1901.

Can anyone see them in 1891 - should be in the West Ham / Walthamstow area, as Clara was born there in 1886 (Clara Rose on BMD)

Also, Clara's mum Ellen (nee Diamond) and parents are a mystery before 1861 - dad James DIAMOND, mum Susan, both born Bridgewater allegedly, no sign before 1861 when they are in London ....

got me stumped !

Technical Help / Why are MOVED threads documented by ....
« on: Wednesday 30 July 08 14:09 BST (UK)  »
.... a new thread just to confirm that a thread has moved from A to B.

The system is smart enough to keep track by its title and poster etc, so it seems redundant - and wastes resources - to post a new thread telling us nothing really.

plus its annoying that they clutter up the 'Unread Posts since last Visit'

Can they be eliminated ?
