Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation on marriage cert
« on: Thursday 24 March 11 01:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anybody make out my g-g-grandfather's occupation on this 1878 Irish marriage certificate?
A couple of points that may be useful to know:
- he was in his early 30s
- he was a carpenter (so maybe 'Tradesman?)

Armagh / Annacramp marriage
« on: Thursday 24 March 11 01:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I have received my g-g-grandparents marriage cert. They were married in 1878 at Annacramp RC Chapel.
I was hoping to find out where they were living at the time but in both cases residence is given as 'Armagh'. Would this refer to the city (where they were living by the time of the 1901 census) or the county?

Also, I was puzzled that my g-g-grandfather marked rather than signed the certificate. At the time he was in his early 30s. Yet he was able to sign he 1901 census. It just strikes me as strange that he seems to have learned to read at such an advanced age. Does this seem unusual?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Joseph Farrar, b. Bradford c. 1857
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 02:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm looking for my g-g-grandfather Joseph Farrar.  The info I do have:

1876 Marriage Cert - to Emma Burchell,  Bradford, age 19, labourer in worsted mill, Temple Street, Manningham, father Samuel Farrar (deceased), a butcher

1881 Census - Clayton Place, Bradford with father-in-law, age 24, wool carder, born Bradford

1901 Census - Woodlands Road, Bradford with Emma and 4 sons, age 43, grinder in woollen mill, born Bradford

1911 Census - Joseph Street, Bradford with Emma and youngest son, age 54, wool comber, born Bradford

I would like to find him on the 1861 and 1871 Censuses if possible. The closest match I have found in the 1871 is the wrong age (2, not 14), father is Samuel but he isn't a butcher. I can't find anything at all in the 1861.  Any ideas  ???

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Castleford electoral roll
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 05:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am 95% sure I have my 2xgreat-grandfather's death cert but the Castleford address given is not one I have come across before in my other research. I suspect it's the home of one of his many children (he was a widower).
Would the electoral roll from that time, 1931, be of any use to me? I have no experience using these as a source so far so I'm a bit clueless.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Cavan / James Gartland
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 23:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
This is the first of my ancestors who was born in what is now the Republic of Ireland so I would appreciate some guidance on how to verify his birth details.

Family lore says James Gartland was born in Co. Cavan, lived at some stage in Tandragee, Co. Armagh and settled finally in Armagh City. He died there in 1959.

My research so far gives a lot of conflicting facts about where and when he was born, and his father's name.

1901 Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/South_Ward/Charter_School_Lane/1010802/
born c. 1889 Co Monaghan  ??? , father Peter

1911 Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Armagh/Tanderagee_Urban/Mill_Row/332697/
born c. 1888 Co Cavan, father deceased

1916 Marriage Cert
born c. 1886, father James

My Mum says
born 1892 Co Cavan, but she doesn't know where she got this info from.

Using the LDS pilot site I have found 5 James Gartlands that may be mine:
James Gartlandy  1887 Kells (Cavan/Meath)
James Gartlan 1890 Bailieborough (Cavan)
James Gartlan 1888 Carrickmacross (Monaghan)
James Gartlan 1890 Carrickmacross (Monaghan)
Peter James Gartlan 1886 Carrickmacross (Monaghan).

What is the best way for me to proceed?

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Occupation Interests / Wool washer in 1861 Census
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 03:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Not sure if this might be better in the Census section but thought I would try here.
One of my ancestors worked in a woollen mill in Bradford.
In the 1861 census his profession is given as "Wool Washer ....."
I'd like to know what the 'Wo' means after wool washer
