Roger,

Robert appears in the 1861 Census for Mathern, Monmouthshire (as born 1818, Ruthin) and thereafter up to  and including 1901 (the year he died), but his birth date hovers around 1824.

His marriage to Mary Anne Mainwaring is recorded as 26th May 1853 at Widcombe Church, Bath, Somerset - he was a deacon at Bath Abbey. That's definitely him.

Then there's the Oxford records which have a Robert Hughes of New Inn Hall, Oxford BA April 1852, MA from Jesus Coll. May 1854 -  I've just found online records for New Inn Hall so maybe the key is there...

Thanks-I'll work round that.
Given the dates, have you obtained a copy of the wedding certificate that would specify his father's name and occupation(details if available)

Not yet (re the certificate) - put off by the ancestry price but just twigged that I can get it from the GRO. However if Robert had no living parents at that point there might be very little relevant info.

In the New Inn Hall records there's one reference: Mich T 1850 ... Robert Hughes ... Jesus.

The only real information to be gained is confirmation of his father's occupation which should still be specified even if deceased.
Everything does check back to a John and Anna Maria being his parents with birth in 1819 in Ruthin.
I think I gave you the ref. for the 1841 census previously(lodgings at Jesus College)-for completeness in case you don't have it
1851
HO107 1690 202 12

If you go to the Somerset/Bath Register office the reference is
1853 C25/2/120
(if you go down this route please double check ref. - www.bathbmd.org)

THe baptism record for Feb 1819 says

Robert Hughes, son of Rev John occupation clerk, and Mary Ann
Abode:Borthyn Llanfwrog (which is a district of Ruthin St Mwrog)

Might still be Anna Maria but will look for marriage to Mary Ann

No other  record of similar parentage/children nearby in time-lending weight to
Corwen/Oswestry move?

Thanks so much, Roger.

That must be him, then! Amazing.

Apart from James (Vaughan) Hughes being born at Oswestry in 1821 there's no other Shropshire connection until cousin RHM Hughes becomes rector of Llansantffraid yn Mechain in the 1840s (which may not be coincidence). I've come across Llanfrwog before but it escapes me now. I'm very interested to see what Robert's marriage certificate says - have to wait a few weeks, though...

...and so I speculate that John Hughes (ie. CCED 112256) must have taken a temporary position at Trefonen in Oswestry, where he sons were born, before going on to Llandullas (next door to his aunt and uncle at Llysfaen), then on to Cilcain and Nannerch.

The headache is abating. Slightly!

A few bits and pieces to be followed through:-

1828 Pigots Directory has under Nobility/Gentry/Clergy for Ruthin

James Hughes Esq. Castle Street
John Spier Hughes Esq. Castle Street
Richard Hughes Esq Castle Street
and
Richard Horne Esq Denbigh Road

1835 Pigots has:
---- Horne Esq  Borthyn
James Hughes Esq Castle Street
The Misses Hughes  Castle Street
Rev Thomas Hughes(forgot to note address)

I can find Hornes in the Oswestry area and there is even a notorious character round Ruthin at the time called James Vaughan Horne!

Denbighshire Archives have a number of potentially interesting documents including

Llanfwrog list of incumbents with notes 1452-20th century

To be continued........
