Charles Senior, born Leeds abt 1846
« on: Monday 04 March 24 12:46 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the Senior family, Charles born 1846 and his sister Eliza was born 1856. Would like to know who their parents were and when and where they were born. I know Charles was living in Hunslet, Leeds in 1891. He had his brother in law, Charles Gilchrist, and family, living with him.

Hello
His parents where John Senior a mason and Ann Cannings his wife.
Charles is baptised 7 Jan 1849 at St Peters Leeds s of John and Ann a mason pf Pottery Fields
birth 8.10.1845.
Sister Emma born 5.6.1848 baptised at the same time.
I can see Charles 1845,Emma 1848 ,Mary Ann 1851,Eliza 1855 ,John William 1857 ,George 1860 and Tom 1866.

His parents married 17.1.1848 at Leeds St Peter and his birth was registered Dec qtr 1845 as Charles Canning in Leeds.
It looks like Charles was named after John Senior's brother Charles Senior born 1834 so I would assume his parents just married a little late.
Her father is William Canning a weaver.

1851 census 3 Ashley St   Hunslet
William Senior 58 bleacher of  linen Silkstone
Mary 54 Burton
Charles 17 mechanic Meanwood?
Eliza 15
John 31 mason
Ann 31 Leeds
Charles 5
Emma 3

ps father John died 19 Feb 1861

Thank you. That works for me and is confirmed in the 1891 census. I will now look for the information on John Gilchrist who married Mary Ann Senior in 1968 at St Jude, Pottery Field, Hunslet. Leeds. He was born in Scotland. In the 1871 Leeds census John Gilchrist is shown as an iron forgeman.

Thank you. It would be great to find the 1861 census, for any member of the Gilchrist family, in either Scotland or England. Could be a misspelling, or ??

Think we have just got lucky

1871 census Dewsbury
Margaret Gilchrist 48 married husband in America born Scotland
Jessie Gilchrist 19 born Scotland
James Gilchrist 18 born Scotland
Ellen Gilchrist 18 born Scotland
William Gilchrist 16 born Huddersfield
Alexander Gilchrist 14 born Huddersfield
Joseph Oldroyd age 2 born Leeds grandson ( he is the son of Margaret Gilchrist )

Margaret Gilchrist married George Oldroyd 1868 Hunslet

I can't find a birth record on the gro.gov for William and Alexander but I did find a birth
For a Benjamin Gilchrist 1859 Huddersfield mothers maiden name Wells Benjamin died 1861 Huddersfield
Also a Thomas Gilchrist born 1860 Huddersfield died 4 January 1863 you can find this record on findagrave son of John & Margaret Gilchrist ( watchmaker ) so they were in England by 1861 but still no luck with census record

There is a possibility John Gilchrist and Margaret were separated
Looks like he started another life with a Elizabeth Carey
This John Gilchrist is on the 1870/1880 USA census born in Scotland occupation watchmaker
Will check more tomorrow
