Durham Lookup Requests / Glass surname around Wolsingham
« on: Monday 25 February 13 20:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to track the whereabouts of Richard Glass for some time without success but I have now just discovered that he lived  near Wolsingham, County Durham probably working as a shepherd or Ag. lab  on a farm at or near  Ayhope Shiel(d) around 1810-1825 approx.  he was married to Ann Taylor and it's possible some of his daughters were born there, in particular, Margaret 1818c, and Mary 1822c. Has anyone come across him or his family in that area? He was a friend of John Hankey and family of Ayhope Shiel(d)and Susannah Sanderson who lived with them. Richard and family had moved to Wemyss in Fife by 1825 where they remained.

If anyone has come across them in any church records (they were originally Presbyterians but may also have had connections with the Anglican Church) I would be very grateful for further information.

Hopefully......

Occupation Interests / clockmakers
« on: Saturday 20 October 12 17:01 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about Thomas Tait who was a clockmaker in Belford and then Alnwick, both in Northumberland. Born in 1778 he disappears from trade directories after 1830 and I have not been able to track his children after that date either.

Can anyone suggest how I could find out more using clockmaking resources? Our church in Belford has a clock he made in 1812 and we want to commemorate this. Any help would be appreciated.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / MALLETT/ COE Wiveton and Blakeney
« on: Wednesday 27 June 12 14:22 BST (UK)  »
My ancestors Henry Mallett and Eilizabeth Coe married at Blakeney  3 Feb 1824. However i have seen a newspaper entry   Bury and Norwich Post 25 Feb 1824 stating:

Lately at Wiveton the Rev H Mallett of Blakeney to Miss Coe youngest daughter of Shepherd Coe Esq of the former place.

I am sure these are the same people although I thought the father of Elizabeth was Henry and not Shepherd. Does Esq signify higher social status? Please could anyone with access to Wiveton Parish Register check this entry for names, date etc. It is rather puzzling.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Blakeney MI's
« on: Sunday 29 April 12 21:27 BST (UK)  »
Some years ago I spotted transcriptions of gravestones for my ancestors HENRY ( died 30.8.1871) AND ELIZABETH MALLETT (died 23.1.1875) buried at Blakeney in a book of MI's for the HOLT (I think) area. Of course, I now can't remember where I saw this book! Although their burials are recorded in Blakeney Parish Register  I could not locate the gravestones when I visited the churchyard.

Does anyone have access to the book in question and if so does it provide any further information on their location in the churchyard? Is there a graveyard plan? I am visiting Blakeney in June and would love to find them.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for the baptism of Jean/Jane Rutherford or Mills about 1838-1840 at ECKFORD or nearby possibly at  CRAILING. Mother was Isabella (or possibly Elizabeth)Mills. Not sure if her mother was single when she had her. Does anyone have access to Eckford or Crailing Old Parish registers who could do a look-up for me, please?

This is a photo of suffragettes marching over Berwick Bridge in 1912 and I would love to have a clearer copy to see the detail in it and maybe even identify some of the women. Please can anyone help? I know it's a challenge!

Northumberland / REDPATH Hetton House/Fowberry Chatton
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
I have been chasing the baptism of JOHN REDPATH born about 1792 for many years. In the 1851 census his birthplace is transcribed as WELDON HOUSE  which is near Brinkburn. But on re-examining the original census with the help of another Redpath researcher  I now believe this is HETTON HOUSE and I have found a baptism at Wooler West St Pres. of John son of John Ridpath and Isabel of Hetton House, Chatton in 1789. So I now have a new lead after all these years! It all makes sense as young John married a woman working at nearby Fenton before 1816. The name was very rare in the Brinkburn area.

Can anyone help with the marriage of John and Isabel REDPATH/RIDPATH  about 1788 in the Chatton/Wooler area?

I realise it may have been an irregular marriage. Their other children- Esau, Ailsy, Mary, Nanny, Walter and William were baptised at the same church between 1780 and 1798 while they lived at Fowberry mains, Fowberry New Hall and Broomy Laws as well as Hetton House.

Any baptisms, marriages or burials of members of this family could be a huge help in tracking further back. There are so many branches of Redpaths in this area I want to be sure I have the right ones and have already checked a number of registers with no luck.

The names of Esau, Ailsy and Nanny seem unusual. Do these give any clues?

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Durham Lookup Requests / Gateshead potteries
« on: Saturday 20 November 10 15:39 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor John Codling ran a pottery business in Felling Shore and Sheriff Hill in Gateshead in 1830-40's. He went bankrupt in 1844 when in business with Thomas Patterson in Sheriff Hill (reported in London Gazette). In 1851 he was over the Tyne in North Shields living at Brewery Bank and again working as a potter. He died there in 1872.

Can anyone suggest how I can find out more about his pottery?

Has anyone come across earthenware with a Codling mark?

How could I research Tyneside potteries further?

I know that a George Patterson ran Tyneside Potteries about this time in Gateshead and John Codling may be related to the Pattersons as one of his daughters was a servant to Ephraim Patterson and recorded as the latter's niece. John's first marriage was to Sarah Patterson a daughter of Ephraim.

Can anyone with local knowledge help me?
