London and Middlesex / Thomas Guy of Crooked Lane
« on: Monday 20 May 24 05:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am looking for some help with Thomas Guy of Crooked Lane London and Ascot Heath/Sunninghill Berkshire for whom I offer the following information:

Eliza Ann Guy born 24 Jun baptized 18 Aug 1825 at St Mary Abchurch to Thomas & Elizabeth Guy of Crooked Lane, a builder.

Thomas Barringer Guy born 8 May baptized 29 July 1827 at St Michael Crooked Lane to Thomas & Elizabeth Guy of Ascot Heath, a builder.

Alfred & Frederick Guy (twins) baptized 14 September 1829 at Sunninghill Berkshire to Thomas & Elizabeth Guy, a builder.  Alfred is buried 25 February 1833 and Frederick is buried 15 March 1833, both at St Michael Crooked Lane, both living in Crooked Lane.

Thomas Guy is on the London Electoral Register in 1834 residing in Crooked Lane.  He is then on the Berkshire Electoral Register in 1841, 1842 & 1843 owning a cottage on Ascot Heath while residing at 6 Crooked Lane London.

I could not find a Guy on the 1841 Census at either Ascot Heath or Crooked Lane.  I think I have the mother Elizabeth 50yo servant born in county and son Thomas 14yo clerk not born in county living in Upper Albany Street Marylebone.

Land Tax was assessed on a building in Crooked Lane occupied by some-one surnamed Guy from 1832 to 1885.  The entries from 1832 to 1852 are noted as “Thomas Guy” or “late Guy”, thereafter just as “Guy”.  The lower or crooked end of Crooked Lane was demolished in the mid-1830’s for the access road to the New London Bridge; the upper end disappeared in the mid-1880’s for similar reasons.

Eliza Guy marries Thomas Foulis 30 Dec 1855 at St Luke Old Street giving her father as Thomas Guy wire worker and witnessed by Thos B Guy her brother.

Thomas Barringer Guy marries Emma Chapman 29 May 1850 at St George Camberwell giving his father as Thomas Guy wire worker.

I cannot locate a birth, marriage, or death for Thomas Guy or his wife Elizabeth.

Some online trees suggest the marriage of Thomas Guy to Elizabeth Low dated 21 January 1813 at St Marylebone to be him along with additional children Louisa born 1814, Richard born 1816, George born 1817 and Elizabeth born 1823.  I am not convinced this is the correct family.

Any thoughts or other information would be helpful and appreciated.

Cheers, Colin

Berkshire / Walter Jennings Farey/Fairey/Fairy died 1856 Radley
« on: Sunday 24 March 24 04:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have a Walter Jennings Farey baptised 31 Dec 1837 at St John's Hackney London to James (a coachman) and Mary Farey of Dalston.  I then have him with his parents and numerous siblings in the 1841 Census in Charles Street West Hackney, and the 1851 Census at Elizabeth Place West Hackney.  I haven't been able to locate him after this last for some time now.

Today I put his details into findmypast and came up with a death in 1856 at Radley Berkshire of Walter Jennings Fairy born 1838.  Now this is pretty encouraging although I have no idea why he would be in Radley.

I checked this on freeBMD and got Walter Fairey died 9/1856 Abingdon (which includes Radley) Vol 2c p163.  I then went to the GRO site to order an image and their search doesn't locate this death at all.

What I would like, if any-one can help, is any further details on the burial entry; find the GRO entry so I can order an image; or think of any reason why a poor 18yo lad from Dalston/Hackney would be so far from home in Radley Berkshire.

Cheers, Colin

He went in to the Army Medical Dept in Aug 1884 and was appointed surgeon from Jan 1885; promoted to surgeon captain in early 1892; promoted to surgeon major in 1897.

He then left the army shortly thereafter to become Principal Civil Medical Officer and Inspector-General of Hospital in Ceylon and was there for over fifteen years.  He was knighted in 1904.

He re-activated for WWI into RAMC as a major and later lieutenant colonel running the Harvard Unit at General Hospital No22 at Camiers in France, then was at the Auxiliary Hospital for Officers at Fowey Cornwall.

Essex / Thomasin Chalk baptism 1697
« on: Friday 27 October 23 03:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is it possible for some-one to view the parish register for St Mary the Virgin at Stansted Mountfichet for the baptism of Thomasin Chalk on 3 May 1697.

The information I have is that the female child is base born to Thomas Chalk of Great Hallingbury without a  mention of the mother; which I find unusual.

I am hoping there is something else on the page that may have been missed.

Many thanks, Colin

London and Middlesex / Obediah & Francis Surridge baptisms 1640's
« on: Wednesday 01 March 23 21:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am looking for the baptism of these two brothers Obediah & Francis Surridge between 1630 and 1650 (be imaginative with the spelling, I have had to use s*dg* to find later records and in some cases just *dg*).

I have come across baptisms at St Clement Danes and was hoping someone with access to the actual register may be able to look for any missing information:
Obediah with no surname and no relatives in 1640
Francis with no surname and no relatives in 1647

Any help is always appreciated,

Colin

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Richard & Cicely Northwood wills look up
« on: Monday 06 February 23 21:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am hoping some-one could look at the following two wills on the Staffordshire, Diocese of Lichfield & Coventry Wills & Probate database:

  1. Richard Northwood probate 1729 labourer of Shifnal Shropshire
  2. Cicely Northwood probate 1736 widow of Ryton Shropshire

I am looking for any mention of their son Richard and in particular if he is located somewhere in London.

It's a long shot hope for a connection.

Thanks, Colin
