Welcome to Rootschat

Births on freebmd do not show mothers maiden name prior to 1911 but you can use GRO online to check.  If a birth registration has no mothers maiden name against it - it means the child was illegitimate

Is that the one where John is shown as a servant?

Have you tried looking for a John Lister/Lester occ weaver on the 1841 census - although that assumes he was still alive by 1841🤔

Wakefield was the RD for Ardsley & Doncaster covered Conisborough.  There is an 1840 death in Wakefield for a John Lister aged 78  (freebmd) but Lester on GRO online

I think you are most likely looking for a baptism/birth around 1812/13.   George was born around 1820 so she was approx 7 older than him.

1851/71 & age at death support an 1812/13  birth

Surname in 1871 is Hoult & Hault in 1881.  George is a widower in 1881 & there is a death for an Elizabeth Hoult age 65 Sept qtr 1876 Doncaster  9c 390

There are only baptismal records prior to 1.7.1837 - assuming her parents had her baptised

Is any occupation shown for her father on the 1838 marriage cert?

Her birthyear is inconsistent on census entries? 1851 shows 1813 Ardsley but in 1861 it’s 1808 Ardsley??  1871 back to 1813

As George was younger than her she may have knocked years off her age when they married but “came clean” later

The author didn't seem to know much about him but must have got that info from somewhere.  Given that the book was written in 1886 it's more likely the locals would remember him

I'm not having any luck matching the census references to a John Gibbin

Was he still alive at those times?
