thank you to all who responded.  I totally agree with Churwell, but, I cannot find another occurrence of Kirtley, or possible variant of that surname in Batley or surrounding environs.

He may have been an incomer?

I would tend to agree with you,however, so far, I have found two farmers, a schoolteacher and a local landed gentleman declared as poor!

I have come across the word "Poor" written after some baptism entries in an 1800-1812 baptism register.

Can you explain the significance, and/or the specific reason why Poor was written after an entry.

Good morning Clayton and DRH123,

thank you for responding.

I was unable to request a copy of Mr. Redmonds' book through my local library, reference copy only.  So I went onto the Amazon website and purchased a copy from Music Magpie for the princely sum of £1.05 plus postage.  The 'as new', with dust jacket, book arrived this morning.

On consulting the pages referenced by Clayton, I agree that Maier can be interpreted as Maje(o)r, also suggested by David, and does make sense for a first name, which I have come across many times before.
