Lincolnshire / Re: Canwick Road Cemetery - Lincoln

I copied this a year or two ago whilst in the Archives.

I don't seem to have a D - perhaps it's below E  ::)

I have a feeling that C is perhaps one bay left as pictured and D is where you have C marked, then again that could be the difference between the two listings or then again it could be my memory.

Things to know before you go;

As mentioned, take some drink/food if you intend to be a while, the location is quite a way from any shops.

Don't leave valuables on show in the car, visitors to the "old" cemetery have to park in a small layby alongside the main road and you will be far from your car at times and unable to see it clearly.

The newer and St Swithins area has off road parking but access to the burial areas is again quite a distance from the parking area and you cannot see your vehicle, nor can passers by.

There are toilets but they are situated in the furthest corner from the main road.

The soil is quite sandy and the area is a favourite with rabbits, beware stumbling into a rabbit hole and twisting an ankle or similiar.

Until you see the layout of the cemetery "in person" it is difficult to visualise the size and layout, the newer section has an easier to follow rectangular pattern, the older section with the curved sections can be a real pain. Try to be methodical, it will save hours of time and miles of walking.

A worthwhile exercise if you can do so is to visit the library and check the Monumental Inscription listings.

Study the surname index for your surnames, for example you might find the surname Willis listed at A10, A15, B23, C103 etc

A map showing which section is "A", "B" etc is in fact the cover for the monumental listings, either photocopy the plans or ask the staff to do it for you (if memory serves it is 60 pence per copy) but it will help you find your bearings when you visit.

It's a beautiful place but there is very little shelter from the elements so take precautions against the extremes of the weather

One thing to note is that the LFHS have listed Monumental Inscriptions for Canwick Road, BUT the references found on those are not the same as the plot numbers in the cemetery register.

I have somewhere around 100 burials to locate based on NBI, Familyhistoryonline.net and the LFHS Monumental Inscriptions. These cover ten or so surnames, if you ever chance upon someone in there shouting for George then it will probably be me!!

Not all the stones survive and with something close to 18,000 burials it is a big place and spread over two sites.

I did enquire about a plan from the council but despite several requests never had a reply.

I must admit the West Derby and Lincolnshire references threw me in the first post. They are on opposite sides of England.

Bell is quite a common name in the Louth/Horncastle/Market Rasen areas of Lincolnshire (i don't have any in my tree but have come across dozens while searching the census for people) and there are still Bell families in the area today.

Lincolnshire is basically split in two, North Lincolnshire (covering Grimsby, Barton upon Humber, Scunthorpe and the Isle of Axholme) has a local bmd index. The rest of the county doesn't have a local bmd index at present.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Who do you Think You Are / FTM Software
« on: Saturday 05 April 08 23:50 BST (UK)  »
The most recent version of Family Tree Maker is FTM 2008. It hasn't has the best reviews and isn't as user friendly as earlier versions apparently. After seeing reports from folks who bought it i decided to stick with my 2005 version.

The more recent "earlier" versions listed from newest to oldest are

FTM v16
FTM 2006
FTM 2005

The 2005 and 2006 versions can be bought as deluxe "WDYTYA" versions or standard (ie non WDYTYA) versions.

The main difference is that the deluxe editions include some additional discs with some parish records on them, quite frankly these have pretty poor coverage and are not worth the extra money.

Some packages also include an Ancestry subscription for anything from 14 to 90 days, prices vary depending on the offer.

Recently you could buy the non wdytya 2006 version online from  around £6 inc p&p from online retailers

Not sure if you have these but  burials for Tuckney; probably related (unusual name).

Tuckney TAYLOR Date 14 Oct 1825 Aged 53 Place Kirton in Holland Description St Peter & St Paul

Tuckney TAYLOR Date 10 Sep 1865 Aged 34 Place Whaplode Description St Mary

Tuckney TAYLOR Date 22 Feb 1877 Aged 66 Place Whaplode Description St Mary

Tuckney TAYLOR Date 18 Dec 1877 Aged 2 Place Whaplode Description St Mary

Nothing obvious around the date for Joseph in Lincolnshire.

World War Two / Re: Sir Frank Job Goulson. DSO, OBE
« on: Friday 14 March 08 18:16 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the replies, i should have added that i'm offline during the week so couldn't reply, apologies for that.

I'm a fourth cousin to this chap, i have the details for the births of his two children and their marriages etc but haven't been in touch with them (the son followed the army tradition and the daughter married an army Captain during the 1970's).

I did find references in some military book sites but will follow up the links posted above.

Thanks again

World War Two / Sir Frank Job Goulson. DSO, OBE
« on: Sunday 09 March 08 22:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a rellie was awarded the DSO and OBE for action in WW2.

Eventually he went on to become a Brigadier and was acting commander of the Royal Nigerian Army during the early 1960's. He died in 1962 in a car accident en route to Enogu.

Strangely i can find references to his predecessor and his successor, photographs etc but nothing for my man anywhere.
Can anyone suggest a possible source of photographs?

I have tried google and several military sites, historical military sites etc but drawn a blank.

Any suggestions?
